ABOUT SALERNO, ITALY

Situated in an ancient palace, once belonging to the Salerno nobility, in the historical centre of the city, the school looks out, on one side, over the beautiful municipal botanical gardens and the Verdi Theatre and, on the other side, over the splendid Gulf of Salerno and is itself overlooked by the imposing castle of Prince Arechi.The school welcomes students of all nationalities throughout the whole year and as well as the Italian Language courses also proposes a vast range of cultural and recreation activities which enhance the studying experience in the best way possible.Taking part in the Academy's courses, therefore, offers the student an opportunity of living the Italian life and of appreciating its more interesting aspects: culture, art, social life, the sea, its gastronomy and its popular traditions.

ABOUT SCHOOL COURSE PROGRAMS

ITALIAN INTENSIVE COURSE

This course is recommended for those who may have less time to study and/or who want more intensive language tuition each week. The course offers the opportunity to consolidate grammar, to review conversation and to achieve more fluency in reading, speaking and writing. Classes are from Monday to Friday. This course runs throughout the year and at all levels from beginner to superior levels. Coffee break at 11.00 o'clock.

This course runs throughout the year and at all levels from beginner to superior levels. Lessons focus on the four main language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing, and take place Monday to Friday. Coffee break at 11.00 o'clock.

ITALIAN STANDARD COURSE PLUS

This course combines the experience of learning the language in a group whilst at the same time receiving individual classes. The Standard Course in the morning encourages student to interact and practise the language. The individual classes in the afternoon are tailor-made to student’s individual needs and interests. Classes are from Monday to Friday. It runs throughout the year and at all levels from beginner to superior levels. Coffee break at 11.00 o'clock.

ITALIAN PROFESSIONAL COURSES

Our special courses are a combination of Standard Italian and Business Italian, Italian for Tourism and Italian for Lawyers language courses. They are especially designed for those who want to improve and develop his/her competence specifically in business, tourism and law fields. Students will take part in discussions and real life practice, such as role-plays, meetings, and presentations; they will read specific texts; they will learn specialised vocabulary and develop both oral and written skills related to business, tourism and law. Classes are from Monday to Friday. They run throughout the year. Coffee break at 11.00 o'clock.

ITALIAN LANGUAGE INDIVIDUAL COURSES

The Individual Courses of Accademia Leonardo are complete and extremely flexible. Designed for those who have little time availlable but precise objectives to reach, the course are completely structured around the needs of the single student. On arriving at school the student and the teacher organize a work program which is personalized in both time and subjects.

Price for each hour of lesson is 30,00 euro.

ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSES FOR SENIORS

This Italian language course is ideal for mature and senior students who wish to combine a language course with a range of cultural activities, excursions, and interacting exclusively with other students of a similar age. Language classes are in the morning and focus on grammar, conversation as well as cultural and social aspects of the host country. The study of the language is enriched by a series of cultural activities including excursions, guided walks, wine tasting, cooking lessons, ceramic laboratory, dinners out, cinema, theatre trips and dancing.

Courses run for a minimum of 2 weeks throughout the entire year.

ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSES FOR JUNIORS

This Italian language course is designed specifically for junior students ranging from ages 12 to 16 years old. The minimum number of students per group will be 6 students, the maximum 12 students. During the Italian lesson, the teacher, who is specialized in teaching children, will teach the Italian language and culture through songs, games and various activities. Students will learn to speak in Italian through these games and activities, they will be fluent in reading, writing and speaking. Lessons are from Monday to Friday. In addition to the daily lessons, cultural and sporting activities are organized by the school and are supervised by the tutors. Accommodations are in a residence accompanied by a tutor who will stay with the students.

ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSES AT TEACHER'S HOME

Your teacher

Mario is a 33 year old native from Salerno. He has a University Degree in International Political Sciences and attended a training course to teach Italian to Foreign Students. Mario has a deep passion for music, plays the piano and composes funky Jazz and lounge music! He is sporty, swims and plays football. Chess and electronic matters are his issues too! He speaks English and loves foreigner cultures and he would love to share the genuine South Italian culture with you and let you have an insight to all those charming old traditions as well as the latest trends among the young Italians. Apart from teaching you Italian, Mario will love to show you around in his home town - maybe along a ride with him on his white Vespa! Lessons can be theoretic as well as practise too, it's up to you!

Accommodations

Mario's home is an apartment located in a small and friendly apartment complex. It has 4 rooms, which have been recently reasetted: It's divided into a nice living room ( With sofas, table, writing desk and features TV, stereo and DVD), bedroom, storage room and students room. Bathroom with shower/tub and kitchen with 4 gas coves, oven and micro-oven! The students room is large and charming and furnished with: Bed, wardrobe, cassette and writing desk.

Location

The apartment is located in Salerno city. You will find plenty of grocery stores, bars, pizzerie and all other amenities just below the little sidestreet where Mario lives. It's well located, in a nice residential area, at just 5 minutes from the shopping centre, 15 minutes walk to restaurants, pubs and cafes downtown and 20 minutes walk to the train station with connections to Pompeii, Naples and Paestum and the port with daily ferry connections to the Amalfi Coast and to Capri!

Accademia Leonardo organizes during the week and on weekends as well, together with people from Salerno, young and not so young as well, activities for the students so they can be involved in everyday real-life. We describe some of the main activities that we offer to our students. Our activities program varies every week.

The First Day

The first day at school, students are given a detailed calendar of social events they can take part in during their stay. Salerno offers so many opportunities for culture and leisure that it is impossible to get bored!

Guided Visit to Salerno

Students will discover the city visiting its museums, monuments and places of historic and artistic interest. Morover, a member of the staff will show them how to get around the city, where to go, where to eat, where the shops and banks are located.

Excursions

Accademia Leonardo organizes half or full day excursions to find out more about famous places around Salerno. Capri, Pompei, Amalfi, Positano, Paestum, Velia, Ischia, Palinuro, Naples and Ravello are all within a very close proximity and they worth a visit.

Sports

Canoeing, swimming and football and volleyball are only a few of the sports that can be practised here. It is possible to watch football matches of “Salernitana”, our football team!

Dining out and school parties

Accademia Leonardo organizes many social activities in the evenings. Whether it is dining out in one of the "pizzerie" or a trip to a night club or private parties in wonderful villas with an enchanting landscape, these evenings out are a great opportunity to socialize and meet the Italian people.

Italian Literature Course

To facilitate an approach to the study of Italian literature the course has been divided into two parts:

Part I: from the XIII century to the XVI century Literature
Part II: from the XVII century to the XX century Literature

Films derived from the period's literature are also viewed to give a visual understanding of the setting for the work and enhance interpretation.

Italian Cooking Course

During the lessons the teacher explains the menu of the day, provides information on the types of ingredients used and how to pick them. Related readings regarding Italian cooking are distributed and students prepare recipes in the kitchen of Accademia. Specific subjects will be addressed such as elements of etiquette and custom. At the end of the course a final dinner will give the students the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned.

History of Italian Art

The course starts with an initial historical background on the Greek and Roman art, and concludes with a detailed study of the works of art which form the cultural identity of Salerno and of Campania in general. The course has the objective of enriching the students' basic vocabulary while furthering their appreciation of Italy's art treasure.

Technique and the Decor of Ceramics

The courses on ceramics from Campania, from Vietri in particular, are of special interest. The ancient tradition of ceramics in the Gulf of Salerno, which goes back to the XVI century, is characterised by the use of yellow, blue and copper-green bringing to mind the lemon cultivation of the coast, the typical colour of the sea and the green of the mountains. The courses are held by expert ceramists and teach of the basic techniques used in the production and decoration of artistic ceramics.

Accademia Leonardo has started a serie of courses on wine tasting in association with important wine companies in the area. The course may be taken in conjunction with Italian language course or entirely on its own.
